HLK Wins First Agency CLIO Award

HLK is elated to announce our first agency CLIO award, earned for our work with the St. Louis Browns Historical Society.

The vintage-inspired website preserves the legacy of the best worst team in baseball with archival photography, player stats, biographies and historical timelines, earning a Silver award in the digital/social category.

Partner (and devoted baseball fan) Eric Karlovic said of the win: "We’re honored to be in the same category as RG/A, BBDO, VML and others with the first CLIO win for the agency. Great work happens in St. Louis, and this is just a sign of things to come."

First In Shoes

After its March launch, the site saw more visitors in the first three days than it had in the previous year. As a result, new membership in the organization -- the client’s primary objective -- tripled in year-over-year tracking.

"We decided the tone should fall somewhere between a hall-of-fame exhibit and a sports commentator," says lead copywriter Maeve Connor. "Mostly straightforward, with an occasional wink and nod."

That approach is perhaps epitomized in the site’s opening line, "First in shoes, first in booze, and last in the American League," which guided the rest of Connor’s approach. "We didn’t ignore their record, but focused on the entertaining and inspiring stories that made their legacy so remarkable."

One challenge of the project was consolidating months of research and decades of history into an approachable, consumable format. "We knew we wanted it to read like an exhibit -- in chronological order, but also scannable," says Connor.

The design team had its own challenges in creating an immersive digital experience that still felt historical.

"We're a digital agency, and we always want to create a modern digital experience, but most of the materials and information we worked with were pre-1950s," Art Director Justin Striebel says. "We were inspired by fonts and other graphic elements and treatments of the era, and used aged textures and, of course, photography to achieve a historical effect within a modern and intuitive user experience."
