HLK Gives Back: Restoring St. Louis Through Rebuilding Together
May 9, 2018
This Cinco de Mayo, the HLK family skipped the margaritas and celebrated the occasion in a more meaningful way by joining together with thousands of St. Louis-area volunteers for Rebuilding Day 2018. (OK, OK. We had a margarita after we put the hammers and paintbrushes down.)
On Saturday, 20 HLKers helped one Florissant family with some painting, light carpentry and landscaping to restore their home to its former glory. This is the seventh family that HLK has had the honor to support.
Rebuilding Day unites more than 200,000 volunteers across the country on one Saturday to repair homes and restore pride, dignity and independence. The event was created by Rebuilding Together in Texas in 1973 when a small group of friends noticed some of their neighbors were having a hard time keeping up with repairs and maintenance needed to make their home safe and livable. The group decided to take action, gathering together one weekend with paintbrushes and hammers in hand, hoping to make a difference. Forty-five years later, their legacy continues and the movement has spread to communities across the country.
HLK has participated in this special day for seven years. The project was a natural fit for the agency, aligning closely with our values to be thoughtful, curious and brave. We look forward to the day each year, giving back to the community that has given us so much and getting to try our hands at new
power tool skills.
