Year of Giving: Showing Up for the Communities We Call Home

At HLK, giving back isn’t a moment — it’s a mindset. Through our Year of Giving initiative, employees across offices are putting their eight hours of volunteer time to work in ways that strengthen neighborhoods, support local organizations and create meaningful connections with the people around us.

This year, HLKers have shown up in big and small ways — from hands-on service projects to advocacy, community clean-ups and events that lift up causes close to home.

Supporting Inclusion and Connection

In St. Louis, team members kicked off Autism Awareness Month by volunteering with the St. Louis Arc’s Aging with Empowerment program — helping participants create spring crafts, play bingo and spend time together.

It was a simple way to spark joy and support an organization that empowers people with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout their lives.

Caring for the Places That Bring Us Together

Across offices, HLKers are lending time to parks, rivers and outdoor spaces that bring communities together.

From neighborhood tree care for Earth Day, to clearing invasive plants along the Rivanna River in Charlottesville, to guiding fourth graders on a nature hike through Tryon Creek State Park in Portland — these moments are reminders of how much shared spaces matter.

Standing With Organizations Making an Impact

Volunteers in St. Louis supported ArchCity Defenders with a “Know Your Rights” guide folding party and are preparing for upcoming Freedom Summer community events.

Others returned to St. Pius V to sort produce, stock pantry shelves and help distribute food to hundreds of local families.

And in Chicago, team members wrote letters encouraging voter participation and partnered with the Greater Chicago Food Depository for a day of service.

Giving Back Through Personal Passions

Many HLKers used their volunteer hours to support causes that mean something deeply personal.

One team member helped organize a golf tournament in honor of a friend lost to colon cancer, raising more than $25,000 for Fight Colorectal Cancer. Another supported community festivals and events that bring neighbors together through art, food and shared experiences.

Every act of service — whether it’s two hours, a weekend or months of planning — contributes to stronger, more connected communities.

And as more HLKers continue to use their volunteer time throughout the year, we’re inspired by the impact we can make together.

Thank you to everyone who has given their time, energy and heart. This is what the Year of Giving looks like.
